He was enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1856 to 1859. There, he studied with Joseph Wintergerst and Hans Fredrik Gude. His contributions are so significant that Oslo Museum, National museum of Norway and many other famous museums house an impressive collection of his works.
