Dorothea was a pioneering artist in Møre and Romsdal, possibly the first woman to try to make a living from her art. One critic noted, "She had a master's hand in many of her portraits."

Despite her talent, Dorothea struggled to gain acceptance in artistic circles. As a quiet Christian, she faced rejection for wanting to remain true to the romantic style of the 1880s. When she was turned down for an exhibition, she was heartbroken, saying, "Oh, how sad I was when I got the letter; I got really sick and couldn't paint." She felt dismissed despite knowing her worth, partly because she was a woman.

Financial struggles forced her to paint on cardboard instead of more expensive canvas, which reflects the impact of an artist's mindset on their work.
